In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, Evian has introduced refillable water solutions at the Wimbledon Championship, marking a significant shift in how hydration is managed at this prestigious event. As the official water partner since 2008, Evian is now offering players the option to use reusable bottles or aluminum cans, which can be refilled with Evian water either on the court or at designated refill stations.
This innovative initiative, developed in collaboration with Wimbledon, aims to significantly reduce waste and promote environmental responsibility. By providing a refillable water system for players, the championship is taking a bold step towards a more sustainable future, allowing athletes to stay hydrated while minimizing their environmental impact. The on-court dispensers will be accessible on courts two to 18, while prefilled reusable bottles will be available on Centre Court and No.1 Court.
For spectators, Evian continues to offer its 75cl bottles made from 100% recycled plastic and 33cl recyclable aluminum cans, ensuring that sustainability is a key focus both on and off the court. This commitment to eco-friendly practices at such a high-profile event is truly inspiring and sets a precedent for other sporting events worldwide.
Sarah Dossett, Vice President for Marketing at Danone UK and Ireland, expressed her enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “The development of a refill solution to deliver our Evian water to players demonstrates Evian’s continued commitment to innovating. Together with Wimbledon, we are continuing our journey towards our circularity ambitions. It is fantastic to be able to continue to showcase healthy hydration at such an iconic sporting event.”
Jen Emerton, Head of Account Management at waste charity WRAP, also commended this sustainability effort, highlighting the importance of showcasing a reuse and refill model on such a global stage. “Providing reusable bottles and refill facilities and using bottles in future tournaments will significantly cut the number used by players. This is a great step forward by a UK Plastics Pact member, and we hope to see this idea expanded across the entire tournament at future Wimbledon,” Emerton noted.
Adding to the sustainability efforts, Barclays’ clubhouse has implemented CLUBZERØ’s reusable cups system, which is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to traditional disposable cups. These combined initiatives are paving the way for a more sustainable future, demonstrating that even the most prestigious events can lead the charge in environmental responsibility.
