In a recent conversation with SJO Tennis Coach Kevin Martlage, we delved into his experiences and insights regarding the tennis program. Here are the highlights from our discussion.
Program Development
Coach Martlage reflected on the impressive growth of the tennis program over the past three years. He expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering support from the community, players, parents, and the school. The program has expanded from a modest group of 10 players to an impressive 47 participants over the last two years. Witnessing newcomers pick up a racquet for the first time and progress to winning matches or achieving significant team placements, such as securing fourth place in their sectional last year, has been a rewarding journey. For Coach Martlage, the most fulfilling aspect is offering kids the opportunity to learn a sport they can enjoy throughout their lives.
Observing Player Growth
Coach Martlage emphasized the dedication and perseverance the girls have demonstrated throughout the season. Tennis is a demanding sport, particularly in Illinois where the competition is intense. Despite these challenges, the players’ commitment to learning and improving has been truly inspiring. Their mental resilience and determination have not only enhanced their tennis skills but have also equipped them with valuable life skills that extend beyond the court.
Team Advancements
Since the season’s commencement in August, the team has made remarkable progress. With only five returning players and 22 newcomers, many of whom were new to tennis, the strides made have been commendable. Coach Martlage underscores the importance of continuous improvement and takes pride in how the team has developed its skills, laying a strong foundation for future success.
Rising Interest in Tennis
Coach Martlage attributes the growing interest in tennis among girls to the sport’s novelty and the opportunity it provides to represent their community. The excitement surrounding the program, along with the supportive environment and top-notch facilities like the Atkins Tennis Center, has attracted numerous new players. The enthusiasm of current and former players has also been instrumental in fueling this interest.
Coaching Passion
For Coach Martlage, the joy of coaching at SJO stems from working with the students. Observing them learn and improve in a sport he himself played at their age is incredibly rewarding. He is dedicated to building a sustainable program that offers opportunities for students who might not otherwise engage in sports, driven by the passion and commitment the players bring to the court every day.
