Roger Federer’s Fitness Journey: Aiming for US Open Return

Roger Federer, the iconic tennis player, has been notably absent from the courts since his quarter-final loss at Wimbledon last year. This hiatus has left fans and fellow athletes eagerly awaiting news about his future in the sport. Recently, Federer has reignited excitement by sharing a promising update on his fitness journey as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

The Swiss legend, who has been out of action since his Wimbledon departure, took to Instagram to share images that highlight his rehabilitation progress. These photos capture him engaged in intense gym workouts, including agility drills with ladder exercises and Bulgarian split squats, which test the resilience of his surgically repaired knee. “Rehab is rockinggggggg,” Federer, now 40, enthusiastically captioned, hinting at a potential return to competitive tennis.

The update from Federer was met with widespread enthusiasm from his peers. Players like Fabio Fognini expressed their excitement for his return, while comments from fellow professionals such as Belinda Bencic, Denis Shapovalov, Diego Schwartzman, and Andreas Seppi underscored the support and anticipation surrounding his comeback.

In a recent update, Federer shared a short video of himself practicing tennis and provided insights to SRF TV in March. He emphasized that while he is making progress, a full return to competitive play will require more time. “It’s fine. Much better, obviously I was on crutches for two months so you have to start from the bottom,” he explained. “The knee wasn’t right after Wimbledon, so it couldn’t go on. It will certainly be a while. The end of the summer, early autumn, where I’m aiming for a comeback.”

Federer elaborated on his recovery process, which involves three key phases: initial rehabilitation, regaining mobility, and building overall strength. He mentioned a recent MRI that delivered positive results, boosting his optimism for a return. The Swiss maestro is targeting a comeback at the US Open, a tournament where he has previously excelled, and is also aiming to be fit for the Laver Cup in London, scheduled for September 23-25.
