Kevin Martlage: Inspiring Growth in SJO's Tennis Program

We recently had the chance to sit down with Kevin Martlage, the dedicated tennis coach at SJO, to delve into his experiences and insights. Here’s what he had to share about his journey and the tennis program.

Remarkable Program Expansion and Community Involvement

Coach Martlage is genuinely impressed by the remarkable expansion of the tennis program over the past few years. He credits this success to the steadfast support from the local community, enthusiastic players, committed parents, and the school administration. Reflecting on the program’s evolution from just 10 players to an impressive 47 participants over the last two years, he finds great satisfaction in seeing students pick up a racquet for the first time and achieve significant milestones, such as winning matches or securing a fourth-place finish as a team in sectionals. While victories are gratifying, his primary mission is to cultivate a lifelong passion for tennis among students, offering them a chance to learn and cherish the game.

Dedication and Continuous Improvement

For Coach Martlage, witnessing the girls’ improvement and dedication throughout the season is the most rewarding aspect. He highlights the hard work and commitment required to learn and excel in tennis, especially when competing against well-established programs. The players’ dedication to the sport, their love for the game, and their unwavering support for one another are evident during both matches and practices. This commitment has laid a solid foundation for the team’s growth, not only in terms of athletic skills but also in developing mental resilience and strength that will serve them well beyond their high school years.

Significant Progress Since August

Coach Martlage takes pride in the team’s significant progress since the season began in August. With only five returning players and 22 newcomers, the team has made remarkable strides in skill development. Although they may not win every match, the focus remains on continuous improvement and preparing for future challenges. He eagerly anticipates the team’s continued advancement as they approach sectionals and beyond.

Rising Interest in Tennis Among Girls

Coach Martlage attributes the rising interest in tennis among girls to the sport’s novelty and the opportunity to represent their community and school. The excitement surrounding a new sport and the supportive environment have attracted many players, including 22 new participants this year. The chance to practice and play at the prestigious Atkins Tennis Center adds to the allure. Ultimately, the fun and addictive nature of the game, combined with the enthusiasm of current and past players, fuels the growing interest.

Passion for Coaching at SJO

What Coach Martlage cherishes most about coaching at SJO is the opportunity to teach and inspire young players. Watching students overcome initial challenges and achieve their first successes is incredibly rewarding. He is committed to building a sustainable program that offers opportunities to kids who might not have considered playing a sport. The passion and dedication the players bring to the court motivate him to continue supporting and nurturing their love for tennis.
