As the 2025 tennis season kicks off, Southeast Kansas is showcasing a wealth of emerging talent. Here’s a spotlight on some of the most promising players, each bringing their unique flair and determination to the courts.
Valley Center’s Promising Players
Gabe Shaffer stands out as the only returning 5A state placer from last year. After securing 12th place in doubles, Gabe has been rigorously training during the off-season, aiming to climb higher in the rankings.
Isaac Anderson, a sophomore, made the transition from middle school doubles to high school singles as a freshman. His game has evolved significantly, and he is poised to compete for a varsity position this year.
Drew Alexander, a senior, has dedicated all four years of high school to tennis. Known for his relentless work ethic and passion, he is set to provide crucial senior leadership this season.
Luke Hoy, another senior, has consistently played doubles with various partners each year. Despite these changes, his positive attitude remains unwavering. After qualifying for state last year, he aims to return with a new partner.
Derby’s Notable Competitors
Tyler Bradt, a senior and four-year starter, embodies the team’s culture and character. Having earned a spot at the 6A state tournament last season, he is determined to achieve even greater success.
Johnny Hula, a sophomore, is on a continuous path of improvement. His natural athleticism and competitive spirit make him an invaluable team asset.
Taylor Broberg, another senior and four-year starter, leads by example. His unparalleled effort serves as a source of inspiration for younger teammates.
Caleb Rogers, a senior, is celebrated for his kindness and leadership. Though he shuns the spotlight, his exemplary character is often highlighted.
McPherson’s Dynamic Pair
Bryson Archer & Alex Berger were the top doubles team last year, finishing fourth at state. They are determined to maintain their top-four status this season.
The sophomore class, featuring Hayden Siemens, Mason Eisenbarth, Rogan Jones, and Grayson Koenig, shows immense potential to fill the remaining top six spots.
Conway Springs’ Steadfast Competitor
Levi Mies, a senior, has qualified for state three years in a row. After competing in doubles for two years and singles last year, he is expected to be among the top 3-2-1 A players in the region.
Hesston’s Historical Standout
Asher Deutschendorf is on track to become the most successful player in Hesston’s history. With over 30 wins each season, Asher’s impressive record includes a state championship in 2023 and two third-place finishes. His skill set is a blend of power and finesse.
Janmejay Patwardhan, known as JJ, qualified for state as a freshman. Despite initial challenges with doubles partnerships, he has grown significantly and achieved postseason success.
El Dorado’s Promising Pair
Theron Mays & Lane Eck made a strong impression by placing sixth at state as freshmen. Their future looks bright as they continue to hone their skills.
Andover Central’s Aspiring Athletes
Jaxon Post finished as the sixth medalist in 5A singles in 2024. His leadership extends beyond the court, as he actively supports younger players.
Sophomores Elias Kachelmeier, Henry Walker, and Will Schaefer are passionate about tennis. Elias and Henry qualified for state in 2024, finishing 10th in 5A doubles, while Will concluded the year with 22 varsity singles victories. Their potential is undeniable.
