Telstra's NetCam Technology Revolutionizes Wimbledon Viewing Experience

This year, Telstra’s groundbreaking NetCam technology is being introduced at The Championships, Wimbledon, providing audiences with an unparalleled view of the prestigious tennis tournament. This state-of-the-art technology is the latest innovation from Telstra’s Globecam division, which is well-known for its expertise in live, point-of-view miniature camera solutions, especially in the realm of live sports broadcasting.

NetCam is strategically installed on either side of the net, delivering a unique panoramic perspective of the action on Wimbledon’s Centre and No. 1 Courts. This enhancement not only elevates the viewing experience for fans but also provides players and officials with a distinctive, live net’s eye view of the matches.

Trevor Boal, the head of Telstra Broadcast Services, stated, “Following successful implementations in cities such as Prague, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, and now London, Telstra’s NetCam is transforming the broadcast experience for tennis enthusiasts worldwide. Broadcasting from Telstra’s NetCam at Wimbledon marks a significant milestone, greatly enhancing match coverage.”

The creation of the NetCam device is the result of extensive research conducted at Telstra’s Globecam facility in Melbourne. This development was carried out in collaboration with tennis authorities and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) to ensure its effectiveness. The Globecam team has engineered proprietary camera and software technology, culminating in a unique device encased in a custom-designed housing. This technology captures live play with superior HD quality, stabilization, and a level of control that was previously unattainable.

Key Features of NetCam Technology

The leading-edge NetCam device is equipped with several advanced features:

  • Full HD 1080i/50 resolution for crystal-clear images
  • Complete remote camera control for precise color and exposure adjustments
  • Digital pan, image, and framing adjustments for optimal viewing
  • Lightweight design, seamlessly integrated into the net structure

Tennis is the latest sport to adopt Globecam technology, following its successful use in various sports around the globe, including cricket, football, motor racing, and even live skydiving. Throughout the two weeks of The Championships, Wimbledon, NetCam will be featured prominently, offering a new dimension to the viewing experience.
